EL SECRETO DE LA SANGRE

Un secreto de setecientos años.Una voz que no debería hablar.A seven-hundred-year-old secret.A voice that should not speak.

Arcadia.

Bruce Nowland has been at his new job for exactly one day when he finds Senator Andrew Mainport dead in his office. Half an hour earlier, the old man had entrusted him with a small steel container that opens only to his voice. Minutes later, Bruce’s phone receives a message from the dead man.

Across Boston, Madrid, Oviedo and Geneva, Bruce and Gem Hannan, an archivist who accepts nothing as true until it is documented, follow the trail of a cloth cut in 1306, a box that crossed the ocean, and voices that someone has learned to forge. What is at stake is not only whose blood it is, but who has the right to decide what is done with the answer.

A technological and historical thriller about faith, science and the price of truth.

¿Quién tiene derecho a saber?Who has the right to know?

The novel is fiction. But it stands on three things that are not.

I · Oviedo

A bloodstained linen cloth, kept for centuries in the Cámara Santa of Oviedo Cathedral in northern Spain. Every Good Friday it is shown to the public.

II · La vozThe voice

A few minutes of public recordings are enough to build a voice that can fool a human ear and even some voice-verification systems.

III · 1306

The persecution of the Order is history. The span of cloth someone cut that year belongs to the novel… or so the author says.

No toqué nada.

—No —dije.

When I found Andrew Mainport dead, I had just set two coffees down on a table in the hallway. I had gone for them across Boylston Street. The senator had told me we would have them before lunch. The invitation still stood when I left the building; when I came back, it didn’t.

He was sitting behind his desk with a pistol in his right hand. The blood had reached a reproduction of a gold cross hanging behind him. The wall safe was open. Somewhere a telephone was ringing, old-fashioned and stubborn. I touched nothing. I called 911 from the hallway.

I had just hung up when my phone buzzed. A Luxembourg number, no name. In the voice message, the man lying dead on the other side of the door was speaking.

Bruce, listen to me. Don’t hand over the object. If you do, you’ll be dead tomorrow. Wait for instructions.

My back against the wall. He could have recorded it before he died. It was the only thing I could think of. I made my living distrusting voices; that morning I didn’t look for a single seam in his.

Eleven minutes later the patrol cars arrived. Detective Ben Hall questioned me in the office I had been given the day before. I answered his questions about my schedule, the men I had seen in the lobby and Mainport’s visit. All of it was true, until Hall closed his notebook and asked:

“Is there anything else I should know about your conversation with Mr. Mainport?”

In the inside pocket of my coat was a steel object, not much bigger than a lighter. Mainport had entrusted it to me that same morning. All I had to do was put it on the table, show the detective the message and ask for help. I would no longer have to keep it.

In my pocket, my fingers found the steel. If you do, you’ll be dead tomorrow.

Hall waited. I did the math in the time it took me to swallow. Between a dead man warning me and a stranger asking me questions, I believed the dead man.

“No,” I said.

Hall waited a second. Then he wrote down my answer.

The object stayed in my pocket.

They had given me that job, so they said, because I was a man who didn’t lie.
