Bruce Nowland
A voice-systems engineer. He worked at IBM and then at Vocalis, the company whose verification system let a cloned voice steal 18.7 million dollars from a shipping firm. He was the only one who said so before the Senate, looking at the senators rather than his lawyer. It cost him his job.
After fourteen months of sending out résumés, SIBYL hires him to find the flaws in its fake-voice detector. He makes his living distrusting voices. He has been with Gem for a year and still finds excuses not to meet her parents.
Gem Hannan

She reads the margins of old books as conversations between strangers separated by centuries. She keeps, in a jam jar, the spare parts Bruce has left over every time he tries to fix the tap.

Voice authentication with real-time synthetic-voice detection. Its system listens not only to what you say, but to how you breathe while you say it. It is six weeks away from federal certification.
It isn’t listed in the lobby directory. On the fourteenth floor of Boylston Street, no device with a microphone gets past reception, not even a smartwatch. Its first client is the private archive of the company’s owner.

No toqué nada.
Espere instrucciones.
When I found Andrew Mainport dead, I had just set two coffees down on a table in the hallway. I had gone across Boylston Street to get them. The senator had told me we’d have them before lunch. The invitation still stood when I left the building; when I came back, it didn’t.
He was sitting behind his desk with a pistol in his right hand. The blood had reached a reproduction of a gold cross that hung on the wall behind him. The safe in the wall was open. Somewhere a telephone was ringing, old-fashioned and stubborn. I didn’t touch anything. I called 911 from the hallway.
I had just hung up when my phone vibrated. A number from Luxembourg, no name. The voice message was the man lying dead on the other side of the door.
Bruce, listen to me. Don’t hand over the object. If you hand it over, by tomorrow you’ll be dead. Wait for instructions.
